Guerrilla Yarn Bombing With The Fairies

“Yarn bombing, yarnbombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk.” Definition from Wikipedia

Yarn bombing is referred to by some as a RAK random act of kindness.

Part of the fun of yarn bombing is the feel good factor. Spotting a newly yarn bombed street crossing on your way to work in the morning or finding a previously bare tree, down main street, festooned with pompoms. The suddenness with which yarn bombs appear and often disappear is surprising and often magical. Part of the fun of yarn bombing is its gorilla nature. Trying to guess who might have knitted a yarn bomb and where they came from? Were they put there by yarn fairies with crochet hooks or maybe old ladies wearing woolen shawls and knitted balaclavas? Enjoy the magic!

RENEGADE KNITTING, YARN BOMBING, STREET CRAFT & COLOUR

SONY DSC

I BOUGHT THE LITTLE SCOOTER FROM A LITTLE CHARITY SHOP BEHIND A CHURCH. THE LITTLE OLD MAN BEHIND THE COUNTER ASKED ME IF I WAS BUYING IT FOR MY DAUGHTER, WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I DON’T HAVE KIDS & I WAS PLANNING TO YARN BOMB IT, HE JUST LOOKED AT ME BLANKLY & ASKED MY DAUGHTERS NAME. I DIDN’T WANT TO DISAPPOINT HIM SO I TOLD HIM THAT HER NAME IS TABITHA & THAT THE SCOOTER IS HER CHRISTMAS PRESENT.  HE SEEMED AWFULLY HAPPY, SO I GUESS I SAID THE RIGHT THING.

I THINK THE LITTLE TRIKE BIKE WAS MY NEIGHBOURS CHRISTMAS PRESENT A FEW YEARS AGO, BECAUSE I FOUND IT BROKEN & FILTHY LYING IN A HEAP OF HARD RUBBISH ON THE FOOTPATH OUTSIDE OF THEIR HOUSE. I RESCUED THE BIKE FROM THE TRASH HEAP, STUCK THE BROKEN HANDLE BARS BACK ON & YARN BOMBED IT, WITH FLOURO KNITTING.

YARN BOMBING RETROSPECTIVE

I’ve been posting pictures and sharing tales of yarn bombing on this blog for nearly 2 years now. During the last 3 years I have been involved in a series of community yarn bombing projects and I have published a short ebook on the subject. Today I would like to give a brief refresher course on what yarn bombing is and how it has changed over the past few years.
yarn bombing treesYarn bombing also known as knit graffiti is a form of anarchic craft that melds traditional knitting & crochet skills with street art. Yarn bombing is the art of adorning inanimate & often pedestrian objects in colourful knitting or crochet. Poles, lamp posts, street signs & tree’s are often wrapped in lengths of knitted wool or acrylic yarn.

SONY DSCYarn bombing has become a strong craft movement across the world. Once upon a time yarn bombing was an obscure art form, that began with a single shop door handle in Canada being covered in knitting, to keep customers hands from getting cold when opening the door.

SONY DSCNow there is an annual world yarn bombing day, there are books and knitting and crochet patterns on the subject. Yarn bombers are from all walks of life and come in all ages, sizes and genders, they share a love of knitting and crochet and a sense of fun. Yarn bombers will tackle just about anything from chain link fences, to bike racks, tree’s and even vehicles such as city buses, cars and even the odd army tank.

When I first began yarn bombing it was a little more obscure and generally involved my friends and I covering tree’s in our front yards or getting together to cover an old bike.

Each year there is an entire street art exhibition dedicated to yarn bombed bikes in Adelaide South Australia. Which was designed to promote bicycling as a smart alternative to driving around the city.

Yarn bombing has gained popularity across the world and has begun to attract it’s fair share of media attention. Just type yarn bombing into any internet search engine and a string of blogs, light news articles and colourful pictures will pop up. There are many facebook community pages dedicated to yarn bombing and I recommend liking them as they can post some brilliant photographs of yarn bombing from all over the world.
